The Dow Chemical Company has been named in the first edition of Thomson Reuters’ Top 100 Global Innovators.

This listing recognizes Dow’s continued investment in innovation, which is contributing to economic growth, both within its own organisation and in the nations where it does business.

Dow is committed to innovation in each of the countries it operates.

In the UK for example, Dow frequently seeks out new ways to engage with chemical engineers and future innovators, as well as investing in R&D to create solutions that help solve national and global challenges.

Working with a leading University A good illustration of its UK work is a recent project involving Dow’s Electrical and Telecommunications division. The project was to address increasing demands for electricity distribution and transmission networks in the UK and globally, which require a new generation of underground cables to support the power grids of the future.

The project combined the talents of Dow cable material experts, the National Grid, the University of Southampton and GnoSys, a science and technology company established by the University of Surrey. Together they made significant advancements in developing new power cable for the efficient and environmentally friendly transmission and distribution of electricity and assessed its potential for development in the UK.

Dow is also a driving force behind the innovators of the future.

As well as being a global partner of the first International Year of Chemistry, this year it awarded £18,500 to four Cambridge University students as part of the Dow Sustainability Innovation Student Challenge.

The programme rewards students from universities around the globe for innovative research and thinking that addresses some of the greatest challenges facing the world.

One of this year’s UK winners will use her prize money to develop research into how glaciers are melting as the Earth’s temperature rises.

Innovation spirit Andrew Liveris, Dow Chairman and CEO said: “Dow’s integrated portfolio of solutions makes the world safer, healthier, cleaner and more convenient.

We are uniquely enabled to address the major challenges of an evolving planet while providing increased value for our customers.”

“Innovation is a means of growth and prosperity for companies and nations struggling to overcome sluggish economies and achieve competitive advantage.

We salute the Thomas Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global Innovator companies and their leaders for the innovative spirit they foster and their commitment to protecting intellectual assets.” Said David Brown, president of the IP solutions business of Thomson Reuters.
